Daniel Keene is an Australian playwright and theatre director. He was born in 1955 in Melbourne, Australia. He is best known for his plays, which often focus on the lives of the marginalised and dispossessed. He has written over 50 plays, which have been performed in Australia and around the world. Keene studied at the University of Melbourne, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy. He then went on to study at the Victorian College of the Arts, where he received a Master of Arts in Theatre. Keene has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Patrick White Award, the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award, the Victorian Premier's Literary Award, and the New South Wales Premier's Literary Award. He has also been awarded the Order of Australia for his services to the performing arts. Keene is currently the Artistic Director of the Melbourne Theatre Company. He is also a patron of the Melbourne Writers Festival and the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Keene is married to the Australian actress and director, Robyn Nevin. They have two children.
