Nysmith was born in Santa Clara County, California, and attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he studied theater. He began his acting career in the early 2000s, appearing in small roles in television series such as The West Wing and CSI: Miami. In 2013, Nysmith had a supporting role in the post-apocalyptic horror film The Last of Us, and in 2014 he appeared in the horror-thriller The Purge: Anarchy. He also had a recurring role in the television series The Walking Dead, playing the role of a survivor of the zombie apocalypse. In 2016, Nysmith had a supporting role in the third installment of the Purge franchise, The Purge: Election Year. He has also appeared in television series such as The Mentalist, NCIS, and Criminal Minds. Nysmith is married to actress and producer Jennifer Nysmith, and the couple have two children.
