Cleveland Amory was an American author, reporter, television critic, and animal rights activist. He was born on September 2, 1917, in Nahant, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard University, where he was a member of the Harvard Lampoon. After graduating in 1940, he worked as a reporter for the Boston Herald and later for the Saturday Evening Post. In the 1950s, Amory began writing television criticism for TV Guide, and in the 1960s he wrote a syndicated column for the New York Herald Tribune. He also wrote several books, including The Proper Bostonians (1947), The Last Resorts (1956), and The Cat Who Came for Christmas (1987). In the 1970s, Amory became an animal rights activist, founding the Fund for Animals in 1967. He was also a founding member of the Doris Day Animal League. Amory died on October 14, 1998, in New York City. He was 81 years old.
