Claude Renoir was a French cinematographer and set decorator who worked on over 100 films during his career. He was born in Paris on 4 December 1913 and died on 28 April 1993. Renoir began his career as a camera assistant in the 1930s, working on films such as Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion (1937) and Marcel Carné's Le Quai des Brumes (1938). He then moved on to become a cinematographer, working on films such as Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Silence de la Mer (1949) and Jacques Becker's Touchez Pas au Grisbi (1954). Renoir was also a set decorator, working on films such as Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960) and François Truffaut's Jules et Jim (1962). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on the film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972). Renoir's career spanned over five decades, and he worked with some of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create a unique atmosphere for each film. He was also known for his use of natural light and his ability to capture the beauty of the French countryside.
