Claude Autant-Lara was a French film director, screenwriter, and costume designer. He was born on 5 August 1901 in Luzarches, Val-d'Oise, France. He is best known for his films such as "Devil in the Flesh" (1947), "The Red and the Black" (1954), and "The Earrings of Madame de..." (1953). Autant-Lara began his career as a costume designer in the 1920s, working on films such as "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (1928). He then moved into directing, making his debut with "The Devil in the Flesh" in 1947. He went on to direct a number of critically acclaimed films, including "The Red and the Black" (1954), "The Earrings of Madame de..." (1953), and "The Grand Maneuver" (1955). Autant-Lara was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for "The Earrings of Madame de..." in 1954. He was also awarded the Legion of Honor in 1955. Autant-Lara died on 30 October 2000 in Paris, France. He was 99 years old.

Prolific French director, son of an architect and an actress, who began as art director and production designer for the stage. From 1919, worked as assistant to Marcel L'Herbier and directed his first film, the avant garde 'Faits Divers', four years later. Came to Hollywood in 1930 to make French versions of Buster Keaton films, but returned to France in 1932. Was very prominent as a filmmaker during the 1940's and 50's, but his popularity waned with the beginning of the Nouvelle Vague.
