Clarence Shelmon is a 68-year-old American football coach and running back. He was born on 17 September, 1952 in Bossier City, LA. He attended Louisiana Tech University, where he played football and earned a degree in physical education. Shelmon began his coaching career in 1975 as an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech. He then moved on to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Southern California from 1983 to 1991. During his time at USC, the Trojans won two national championships and four Rose Bowls. In 1992, Shelmon was hired as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. He was the first African-American head coach in the NFL. He coached the Chargers for three seasons, leading them to the playoffs in 1994. After leaving the Chargers, Shelmon returned to college football, becoming the offensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota in 1997. He then moved on to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Texas from 2000 to 2004. Shelmon currently serves as the running backs coach for the Los Angeles Rams.
