Chris Matthews is an American political commentator, talk show host, and author. He is best known for his nightly hour-long talk show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, which aired on MSNBC from 1997 to 2020. He is also the author of several books, including Hardball: How Politics Is Played Told by One Who Knows the Game.
Matthews was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 17, 1945. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a degree in economics. After college, he worked as a police officer in Washington, D.C., before becoming a congressional aide.
In the late 1970s, Matthews began his career in journalism, working as a Washington bureau chief for the San Francisco Examiner. He then moved to NBC, where he worked as a political analyst and commentator. In 1997, he began hosting Hardball with Chris Matthews, which quickly became one of the most popular political talk shows on television.
Matthews has won numerous awards for his work, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Interview in 2000.
