Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic. He is best known for his first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), which is the most widely read book in modern African literature. Achebe wrote fiction, poetry, essays, and children's books. He was a professor of literature at Bard College from 1990 until his death in 2013. Achebe was born in Ogidi, Nigeria, to Isaiah Okafo Achebe and Janet Anaenechi Iloegbunam. He was raised in the Igbo culture and traditions of his hometown. He attended Government College in Umuahia and University College in Ibadan, where he studied English, history, and theology. Achebe's first novel, Things Fall Apart, was published in 1958 and has since become a classic of African literature. It tells the story of Okonkwo, a leader in the Igbo community of Umuofia, and his struggles with the changing customs of his people. The novel has been translated into more than 50 languages and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Achebe's other works include No Longer at Ease (1960), Arrow of God (1964), A Man of the People (1966), Anthills of the Savannah (1987), and Home and Exile (2000). He also wrote several collections of short stories, essays, and poetry. Achebe was awarded the Man Booker International Prize in 2007 and the Nigerian National Order of Merit in 2008. He died in 2013 at the age of 82.
