Charles Correa is an Indian architect, urban planner and activist. He is widely recognized for his pioneering contributions to contemporary Indian architecture and urban planning. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award. Correa was born in 1930 in Sikandarabad, Andhra Pradesh, British India. He studied architecture at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1958. He then worked with the firm of Louis Kahn in Philadelphia before returning to India in 1960. Correa's work is characterized by a sensitivity to the context of the site, and a concern for the social and economic needs of the people who will inhabit the space. He has designed a number of iconic buildings, including the Kanchanjunga Apartments in Mumbai, the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya in Ahmedabad, and the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in Bhopal. He has also designed urban plans for cities such as Navi Mumbai, Chandigarh, and New Bombay. Correa has received numerous awards for his work, including the Padma Vibhushan, the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He has also served as the Chairman of the National Commission on Urbanization, and as the Chairman of the National Institute of Urban Affairs.
