Chantal Payer is a Canadian fencer who was born on 25 July, 1953 in Canada. She is a three-time Olympian and a two-time Pan American Games gold medalist. She is the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in fencing, winning a bronze medal in the individual foil event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Payer began fencing at the age of 12 and was a member of the Canadian national team from 1975 to 1988. She won the Canadian national foil championship in 1976, 1977, and 1979. She also won the Canadian national épée championship in 1979. At the 1984 Summer Olympics, Payer won a bronze medal in the individual foil event. She also competed in the team foil event, but the Canadian team did not medal. At the 1988 Summer Olympics, Payer competed in the individual foil and épée events, but did not medal. Payer also competed in the Pan American Games, winning gold medals in the individual foil event in 1979 and 1983. She also won a silver medal in the team foil event in 1983. Payer retired from competitive fencing in 1988 and is now a coach and referee. She is a member of the Canadian Fencing Hall of Fame.
