She is best known for her work on the comic book series The God Machine and the graphic novel The God Machine Chronicles. She has also worked on various other comic book series, including The Wicked + The Divine, The Unwritten, and The Sandman. Free was born in Orlando, Florida, and grew up in the nearby town of Winter Park. She attended the University of Central Florida, where she studied art and animation. After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in animation. In 2009, Free began working as a storyboard artist for the animated television series The Boondocks. She also worked as a storyboard artist for the animated series Adventure Time and the animated film The Book of Life. In 2011, Free began working on her own comic book series, The God Machine.
