Catherine Freeman is a Malaysian-born producer who has worked in the film and television industry for over 40 years. She is best known for producing the award-winning films The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) and The Killing Fields (1984). Freeman was born in Penang, Malaysia, on 10 August 1931. She attended the University of Malaya in Singapore, where she studied English and Drama. After graduating, she moved to London and worked as a production assistant for the BBC. In the late 1970s, Freeman moved to Australia and began working as a producer for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She produced a number of television series, including the popular drama series The Sullivans (1976-1983). In 1982, Freeman produced the critically acclaimed film The Year of Living Dangerously, which starred Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In 1984, Freeman produced the Academy Award-winning film The Killing Fields, which starred Sam Waterston and Haing S. Ngor. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Freeman has also produced a number of other films, including The Coca-Cola Kid (1985), The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey (1988), and The Boys (1998). Freeman has been married twice and has two children. She currently resides in Sydney, Australia.
