She attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied music and drama. In 1959, Hester released her first album, Carolyn Hester, on the Tradition label. The album featured a mix of traditional folk songs and original compositions. It was well received by critics and helped to establish her as a major figure in the folk music revival. In 1961, Hester released her second album, Carolyn Hester Coalition, which featured a number of prominent folk musicians, including Bob Dylan, who wrote the liner notes. The album was a commercial success and helped to further establish Hester as a major figure in the folk music revival. In the years since, Hester has released a number of albums, including a live album recorded at Carnegie Hall in 1964.
