She has also written for the television series Homicide: Life on the Street, The Corner, and Treme. Black was born in Takoma Park, Maryland, and graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1980. She began her career as a journalist, writing for The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun. She then moved into television writing, working on the series Homicide: Life on the Street. Black has written several books, including The Wire: Truth Be Told, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the series. She has also written a novel, The Coldest Winter, and a memoir, My Soul Looks Back. Black is married to David Simon, and they have two children. She currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
