Burle Marx was a Brazilian landscape architect, painter, ecologist, naturalist, and environmentalist. He is best known for his modernist designs of parks and gardens in Brazil, including the iconic Copacabana promenade in Rio de Janeiro. He was also a prolific painter, sculptor, and photographer. Burle Marx was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on August 4, 1909. He studied painting and sculpture at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, and later studied landscape architecture at the University of São Paulo. Burle Marx's career as a landscape architect began in the 1930s, when he was hired to design the gardens of the São Paulo Museum of Art. He went on to design numerous parks and gardens throughout Brazil, including the Copacabana promenade in Rio de Janeiro, the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo, and the Parque do Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. Burle Marx was also a prolific painter, sculptor, and photographer. He was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1985.
