Bruce Petty is an Australian animator, cartoonist, and filmmaker. He is best known for his work in the 1970s and 1980s, when he created a series of short films that combined animation and live action. He has also directed several feature films, including the cult classic The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972). Petty was born in Melbourne in 1929. He studied at the National Art School in Sydney, and then worked as a cartoonist for the Sydney Morning Herald. In the 1960s, he began experimenting with animation, and in the 1970s he created a series of short films that combined animation and live action. These films, which included The Great McCarthy (1975) and The Off-Season (1977), were highly acclaimed and won numerous awards. In the 1980s, Petty directed several feature films, including The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972), The Return of Captain Invincible (1983), and The Navigator (1984). He also wrote and directed the television series The Mavis Bramston Show (1965-1968). Petty has won numerous awards for his work, including the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Direction (1972) and the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Screenplay (1984).
