Bob Beamon is a former American track and field athlete who is best known for his world record-breaking long jump of 8.90 meters (29 feet, 2.5 inches) at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He was born on August 29, 1946 in South Jamaica, New York. Beamon attended Jamaica High School in Queens, New York, and then attended North Carolina A&T State University, where he was a member of the track and field team. He won the NCAA long jump championship in 1967 and 1968. Beamon's world record jump at the 1968 Olympics was a remarkable achievement, as it was 55 cm (21.7 inches) longer than the previous record. He held the world record for 23 years until Mike Powell broke it in 1991. Beamon was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1981. He was also inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1993. Beamon is estimated to have a net worth of $2 million.
