Bill Melendez is best known for his work as an animator and producer on the Peanuts television specials and films. He began his career in animation in the 1940s, working on the classic Warner Bros. cartoons. He later worked on the classic MGM Tom and Jerry cartoons, and then moved to the United Artists studio, where he worked on the Pink Panther cartoons. In the 1960s, Melendez began working with Charles Schulz on the Peanuts television specials. He was the animation director and producer on all of the specials, and he also provided the voice of Snoopy. He also produced the feature film A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969). In addition to his work on the Peanuts specials, Melendez also worked on other animated projects, including the television series The Smurfs and Garfield and Friends. He also directed the feature film The Phantom Tollbooth (1970). Melendez was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the Peanuts special A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969). He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the Peanuts special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966). At the time of his death in 2008, Melendez had worked on over 200 animated television shows and films. He was 92 years old.
