Bhanu Athaiya is an Indian costume designer and set decorator who has worked in the Hindi film industry for over six decades. She is best known for her work on the 1982 film Gandhi, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. She was the first Indian to win an Oscar. Athaiya was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India, on 28 April 1929. She studied at the J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, and began her career in the film industry in the 1950s. She has worked on over 100 films, including classics such as Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Guide (1965), and Sholay (1975). In 1982, she won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for her work on Gandhi. She was the first Indian to win an Oscar. She was also nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design for her work on the film. In addition to her work in films, Athaiya has also designed costumes for theatre and television. She has also written a book, The Art of Costume Design, which was published in 2003. Athaiya was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 1985. She was also awarded the National Film Award for Best Costume Design in 1991 for her work on the film Lekin.
