Bernhard Zgoll was a Polish-born German engineer and inventor. He is best known for his invention of the Zgoll-Klappensteuerung, a system of valves used in the control of combustion engines. He was also a professor at the Technical University of Munich and a member of the German Academy of Sciences. Born in Chorzów, Poland, Zgoll studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1952. He then worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Munich, where he became a professor in 1965. In the 1950s, Zgoll developed the Zgoll-Klappensteuerung, a system of valves used in the control of combustion engines. This invention revolutionized the automotive industry and was used in many cars, including the Volkswagen Beetle. In addition to his work in engineering, Zgoll was also a member of the German Academy of Sciences and a professor at the Technical University of Munich. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1988. Zgoll died on April 15, 2021, at the age of 96.
