Benjamin Hooks was an American civil rights leader and minister who served as executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1977 to 1992. He was born on January 31, 1925 in Memphis, Tennessee. Hooks attended LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis and graduated with a degree in sociology in 1945. He then attended Howard University Law School, graduating in 1948. He was the first African American to practice law in Tennessee since Reconstruction. Hooks was a leader in the civil rights movement, serving as a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the NAACP. He was a vocal advocate for civil rights, speaking out against racism and discrimination. He was also a strong advocate for economic justice, working to improve the economic conditions of African Americans. Hooks was appointed to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by President Jimmy Carter in 1977. He served as the FCC's first African American commissioner until 1982. Hooks was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007. He passed away on April 15, 2010 at the age of 85.
