Beate Uhse was a German entrepreneur and sex educator who founded the world's first sex shop in 1962. She was born in East Prussia and served in the Luftwaffe during World War II. After the war, she opened a mail-order business selling sex-related products. In 1962, she opened the first sex shop in Flensburg, Germany. Uhse was a pioneer in the field of sex education and was a vocal advocate for sexual freedom and women's rights. She wrote several books on the subject, including "The Joy of Sex" and "The Art of Loving". She also founded the Beate Uhse Foundation, which promotes sexual health and education. Uhse died in 2001 at the age of 81. She was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2002.
