Barbara Seaman was an American feminist, journalist, and author. She was a leading figure in the women's health movement and is best known for her 1969 book, The Doctor's Case Against the Pill. Seaman was a co-founder of the National Women's Health Network and the author of several books on women's health. She was also a frequent contributor to magazines such as Ms. Magazine and the New York Times. Seaman was a recipient of the National Women's Health Network's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Seaman was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Brooklyn College. She began her career as a journalist in the 1950s, writing for the New York Post and other publications. In 1969, she published The Doctor's Case Against the Pill, which was the first book to expose the health risks associated with the birth control pill. The book was a bestseller and helped to launch the women's health movement. Seaman continued to write and speak about women's health issues throughout her career. She was a frequent contributor to Ms. Magazine and the New York Times, and wrote several books on women's health, including Free and Female: The Sex Life of the Contemporary Woman (1972) and Women and the Crisis in Sex Hormones (1977). Seaman was a co-founder of the National Women's Health Network and served on its board of directors for many years. She was also a founding member of the Women's Health Action and Mobilization (WHAM). In 2004, she was awarded the National Women's Health Network's Lifetime Achievement Award. Seaman died in 2008 at the age of 72.
