Barbara Castle was a British Labour politician who served as a Member of Parliament for Blackburn from 1945 to 1979. She was the first woman to hold a Cabinet post in the Labour government of Harold Wilson, and was later appointed to the House of Lords. She was a strong advocate for women's rights, and was instrumental in the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1970. She was also a passionate campaigner for social justice, and was a key figure in the development of the National Health Service. She died in 2002, aged 91.
