Azzam Alwash is an Iraqi hydraulic engineer and environmentalist. He is the founder and president of Nature Iraq, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the conservation of Iraq's natural heritage. He is also the founder and CEO of Eden Again, a company that works to restore Iraq's marshlands. Alwash was born in 1958 in Kut, Iraq. He studied hydraulic engineering at the University of Baghdad and later earned a master's degree in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Alwash has worked on numerous projects in Iraq, including the restoration of the marshlands of southern Iraq, the reforestation of the Tigris-Euphrates river basin, and the conservation of Iraq's wildlife. He has also served as an advisor to the Iraqi government on environmental issues. Alwash has received numerous awards for his work, including the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2008 and the United Nations Environment Programme's Global 500 Award in 2009. He was also named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2010.
