Avery Sharpe is an American jazz bassist, composer, and educator. He is best known for his work with the late saxophonist and composer, Jackie McLean, and for his long-standing association with the Grammy Award-winning jazz group, the Yellowjackets. Avery Sharpe was born on August 23, 1954 in Valdosta, Georgia. He began playing the bass at the age of 12, and by the time he was 15, he was performing professionally. He attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he studied music and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. Avery Sharpe has released over 20 albums as a leader, and has performed and recorded with a wide variety of jazz artists, including McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Wynton Marsalis. He has also performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Avery Sharpe is a professor of music at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is a member of the faculty at the Berklee College of Music. He is also a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. As of 2021, Avery Sharpe's net worth is estimated to be roughly $1 million.

Sharpe has been awarded the NAACP Martin Luther King Jr Special Achievement Award, National Endowment for the Arts Grants and the New England Foundation for the Arts Achievement in Jazz Award (1997).

1989

In 1989, he wrote and conducted the soundtrack for the movie An Unremarkable Life.  In the 1990s, Sharpe was commissioned by Fideleo to write three extended works. In 2004, Sharpe wrote a musical portrait for the stage for Chamber Music Plus. Sharpe (as well as actress Jasmine Guy), are featured in the stage production of Raisin’ Cane.

Sharpe was first bought to prominence by tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp and drummer Art Blakey, but is best known for his longtime association with Piano Jazz Legend McCoy Tyner from 1980-2003. He recorded some 20 plus records with Tyner.
