Curreen was born on 23 December 1981 in Moto'otua, Apia, Samoa. He began his running career in his home country, competing in the 800m and 1500m events at the Pacific Games in 2003 and 2007. He also competed in the 800m event at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In 2008, Curreen moved to the United States to attend the University of Arkansas, where he competed in the 800m and 1500m events. He won the 800m event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2009 and 2010, and was a two-time All-American. Curreen has also competed in the 800m and 1500m events at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014, and the Pacific Games in 2011 and 2015. Curreen represented Samoa at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed for the men's 800 metres. He ran in the fifth heat against six other athletes, including Sudan's Ismail Ahmed Ismail, who eventually won the silver medal in the final. He finished the race in sixth place by three hundredths of a second (0.03) behind South Africa's Samson Ngoepe, with a national record and personal best time of 1:47.45. Curreen, however, failed to advance into the semi-finals, as he placed twenty-ninth overall, and was ranked farther below two mandatory slots for the next round.
