Art Ross was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and executive. He played for the Montreal Wanderers and the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was the first recipient of the NHL's Art Ross Trophy, which is awarded annually to the league's leading scorer. Ross was born in Naughton, Ontario, Canada, on January 13, 1886. He began his hockey career with the Montreal Wanderers in 1906. He played for the Wanderers for four seasons before joining the Boston Bruins in 1910. He played for the Bruins for seven seasons, and was the team's captain for the last three. Ross was an offensive powerhouse, leading the league in scoring four times and finishing in the top five in scoring seven times. He was also a great playmaker, leading the league in assists four times. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945. Ross was also an executive in the NHL. He served as the president of the Boston Bruins from 1924 to 1954, and was the general manager of the team from 1924 to 1945. He was also the president of the NHL from 1938 to 1954. Ross was a pioneer in the development of the modern game of hockey. He was the first to introduce the concept of the "six-man hockey team," which is still used today. He also introduced the concept of the "power play," which is still used today. Ross died on July 9, 1964, at the age of 78. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945. He was also inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 1997.
