He has released over 40 albums as a leader or co-leader, and has collaborated with musicians such as Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, and John Surman. Born in Lillestrøm, Norway, Andersen began playing the double bass at the age of 15. He studied at the Oslo Music Conservatory, and in 1969 he joined the Jan Garbarek Quartet. He has since performed with a variety of jazz musicians, including Terje Rypdal, John Surman, and Kenny Wheeler. In addition to his work as a performer, Andersen has composed music for film, television, and theater. He has also produced several albums, including his own.
