Avelar began his professional boxing career in 1977 and won his first world title in 1983 when he defeated Juan Laporte to become the WBC Featherweight Champion. He successfully defended his title four times before losing it to Salvador Sanchez in 1985. In 1988, Avelar won the WBC Super Featherweight Championship by defeating Azumah Nelson. He successfully defended his title three times before losing it to Gabriel Ruelas in 1991. Avelar retired from boxing in 1995 with a record of 48 wins (30 by knockout), 8 losses, and 1 draw.
