Anna Halprin is an American dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She is best known for her experimental and innovative approaches to dance and performance. She is also a pioneer in the field of postmodern dance. Halprin was born in Wilmette, Illinois, and began her dance training at the age of five. She studied with modern dance pioneers such as Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, and Doris Humphrey. She also studied with Merce Cunningham and John Cage. Halprin has created over 150 dance works, including the seminal work, Parades and Changes (1965). She has also created works for film, television, and theater. Halprin has taught at numerous universities and institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley, the Juilliard School, and the San Francisco Art Institute. She has also been a visiting professor at Stanford University and the University of Washington. Halprin has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Choreographer's Fellowship, and a Dance Magazine Award. In 2010, she was inducted into the National Museum of Dance's Mr. & Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Hall of Fame. In 2020, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
