Ackerman was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 19, 1956. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a degree in theater arts. Ackerman began his career in television in the late 1970s, working as a script editor on the sitcoms Laverne & Shirley and Taxi. He then moved on to directing, helming episodes of Cheers, The Golden Girls, and The Wonder Years. In 1989, Ackerman was hired as a director on the sitcom Seinfeld. He directed a total of 24 episodes of the show, including the series finale. He also served as a script editor on the show. In 1995, Ackerman was hired as a director and script editor on the sitcom The Drew Carey Show. He directed a total of 32 episodes of the show, and served as a script editor for the first four seasons. In 1998, Ackerman was hired as a director and script editor on the sitcom NewsRadio. He directed a total of 24 episodes of the show, and served as a script editor for the first four seasons.
