1964

Andrzej Dec-Williams is a Canadian filmmaker, director, photographer, writer and actor. He was born in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, in late November of 1964. His fascination with visual arts began with black and white photography. Everything started in his 4th grade with a camera from his father. Few photos taken on school day trip to nearby mountain site and later developed by himself in a home made father's dark room seeded Andrzej's fascination with photography. Soon thereafter he became known in his small town as "that boy with the camera", obsessed with capturing the world around him on film. Andrzej's enthusiasm for photography got recognized and rewarded when at the age of 18, straight out of high school, he got accepted to the prestigious Directing Department of Polish National Academy of Film, Theater and Television in Lodz. This European most renowned film school, where traditionally applicants were required to hold at least a college degree or present a substantial body of artistic achievements, had recognized Andrzej's talent for story telling through series of sets of photographs in his portfolio. Film school years gave Andrzej the privilege of being under tutelage and guidance of such masters of film directing craft as the Academy Award Winner director Andrzej Wajda (Man of Iron), as well as Wojciech Has (The Saragossa Manuscript) and Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Pharaoh). During his film school years Andrzej had written and directed number of feature and documentary shorts which were all filmed on 35 mm ARRI cameras.
