She is best known for her 2018 film Fausto, which won the Best Canadian Feature Film award at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. Bussmann studied film at York University in Toronto and at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has directed several short films, including The Blue Dress (2005), which won the Best Short Film award at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. Bussmann has also written and directed several feature films, including the documentary The Obscure Life of the Grand Duke of Corsica (2012) and the drama Limbo (2016). Her most recent film, Fausto, was released in 2018 and won the Best Canadian Feature Film award at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. Bussmann is currently based in Mexico City, where she is working on her next film. She is married to Mexican filmmaker Nicolás Pereda.
