Wilma Rudolph was an American track and field athlete who became the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. She was born in a poor family in Clarksville, Tennessee, and was the twentieth of twenty-two children. She was born prematurely and suffered from infantile paralysis, which left her with a weakened left leg. Despite her disability, she was determined to become an athlete and trained hard to overcome her physical limitations. At the 1960 Rome Olympics, Wilma Rudolph won gold medals in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 4x100-meter relay. She was the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. She also won a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter relay at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Wilma Rudolph was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1974 and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996. Wilma Rudolph died on November 12, 1994, at the age of 54. She was survived by her four children. As of 2021, Wilma Rudolph's net worth is estimated to be around $2 million.

In the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single Olympic Games. A track and field champion, she elevated women's track to a major presence in the United States. As a member of the black community, she is also regarded as a civil rights and women's rights pioneer.
