Vittorio De Sica was an Italian actor, director, and screenwriter. He is best known for his work in the neorealist movement, particularly his films Bicycle Thieves (1948) and Umberto D. (1952). He was nominated for four Academy Awards for Best Director and won two Golden Globe Awards for Best Director. De Sica was born in Sora, Lazio, Italy, on 7 July 1901. He began his career as an actor in the 1920s, appearing in films such as The White Sheik (1922) and The Last Laugh (1924). He then moved into directing, and his first film was The Children Are Watching Us (1944). He went on to direct a number of critically acclaimed films, including Shoeshine (1946), Miracle in Milan (1951), and Two Women (1960). De Sica was married twice, first to Giuditta Rissone and then to María Mercader. He had two children, Manuel and Christian. He died in Rome on 13 November 1974. Vittorio De Sica grew up in Naples, and started out as an office clerk in order to raise money to support his poor family. He was increasingly drawn towards acting, and made his screen debut while still in his teens, joining a stage company in 1923.
