Gowin was signed by the Dallas Cowboys in 1997 as an undrafted free agent, with the intention of replacing free agent John Jett. He made the team because of his leg strength and ability to both punt and handle kickoffs. As a rookie, he had a 41.8 yards gross average (third highest average by a Cowboys rookie) and a 35.4 yards net average, while landing 26 punts inside the 20-yard line.

1996

He would move on to the University of North Texas, where he was a four-year starter while handling the punting and kickoff duties. As a sophomore, he received All-SLC honors with a 36.1 yards average. He finished his senior season 15th in the nation with a 44.3 yards average, All-Big West and third-team All-American honors. His 92-yard punt against Vanderbilt in 1996 stands as the longest in school history and his 89 punts for 3,946 yards as a senior are both school records.
