Terence Parkin is a South African swimmer who was born on 12 April, 1980 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He is a three-time Olympic medalist, having won a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He also won a bronze medal in the 4x100m medley relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Parkin began swimming at the age of seven and was soon competing in local and regional competitions. He was selected to represent Zimbabwe at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he won a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke. Parkin moved to South Africa in 1999 and began competing for his new country. He won a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He also won a bronze medal in the 4x100m medley relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Parkin has won numerous medals at the African Swimming Championships, the All-Africa Games, and the Commonwealth Games. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2018. Parkin is married to fellow South African swimmer, Karin Prinsloo, and they have two children. He is currently the head coach of the South African national swimming team.

2000

Parkin competed in his first Olympic games in 2000 at the age of 20. He used sign language to communicate with his coach. About his trip to the Olympics, Parkin said "I am going to the Olympics to represent South Africa, but it's so vitally important for me to go, to show that the deaf can do anything. They can't hear, they can see everything. I would like to show the world that there's opportunities for the deaf."

1999

Parkin is the only deaf swimmer to be part of the FINA's elite rankings in 1999 and 2000. He holds the record for winning the most number of medals in Deaflympics history with a total of 33. In 2011, Parkin saved a young boy from drowning.
