Telly Savalas was an American actor and singer, best known for his role as Detective Kojak in the CBS television series Kojak (1973–1978). He also starred in the films The Dirty Dozen (1967), Kelly's Heroes (1970), and Escape to Athena (1979). Savalas was born in Garden City, Long Island, New York, the son of Greek immigrants. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was wounded in action. After the war, he attended Columbia University and studied psychology. Savalas began his acting career in the 1950s, appearing in television series such as The Philco Television Playhouse and Studio One. He made his film debut in The Young Doctors (1961). He went on to appear in numerous films, including The Dirty Dozen (1967), Kelly's Heroes (1970), and Escape to Athena (1979). Savalas won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Detective Kojak in the television series Kojak (1973–1978). He also received a Golden Globe Award for his performance in the series. Savalas died of prostate cancer in 1994 at the age of 72. He was survived by his wife, Julie, and their two children. At the time of his death, Savalas had an estimated net worth of $10 million.
