Susan Weber is an American art historian, curator, and philanthropist. She is the founder and director of the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture in New York City. She is also the founder and president of the Bard Graduate Center Foundation. Born in 1954 in Brooklyn, New York, Weber attended the University of Michigan, where she earned a bachelor's degree in art history in 1976. She then went on to earn a master's degree in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University in 1979. Weber began her career as a curator at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City in 1979. She then went on to become the director of the Bard Graduate Center in 1993. Under her leadership, the center has become a leading institution for the study of the decorative arts, design, and culture. Weber has also served as a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Academy in Rome, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is a member of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Weber is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, the National Humanities Medal from the United States government, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1991, Soros was turned down for the job of director of graduate education at the Parsons School of Design. So, with $20 million of her husband's money, she started her own school in 1993, establishing the Bard Graduate Center where she is professor of the history of the decorative arts. BGC offers graduate degrees in history of the decorative and applied arts, cultural and design history, garden history, and landscape studies. The Bard Center is one of only four places in the United States where a student can obtain an advanced degree in the decorative arts. The others are the Winterthur Museum program affiliated with the University of Delaware, the Parsons program., and the George Washington University in partnership with the Smithsonian.
