Roger L. Stevens was an American theatrical producer and real estate executive. He was born on March 11, 1910 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan and graduated in 1932. Stevens was a successful real estate developer in Washington, D.C. and was the founding chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He was also the founding chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Stevens was a major figure in the American theater, producing more than 100 plays and musicals, including West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and A Chorus Line. He was also a founding member of the American Film Institute. Stevens was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985. He died on February 2, 1998 in Washington, D.C. at the age of 87.
