Ralph Blane was an American composer and lyricist, best known for his work in the musicals Meet Me in St. Louis and Brigadoon. He was born in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended the University of Oklahoma, where he studied music and wrote his first musical, The Big Show. Blane moved to New York City in 1937, where he wrote songs for the Broadway musicals Best Foot Forward and Meet Me in St. Louis. He also wrote the lyrics for the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," which was featured in the film Meet Me in St. Louis. In 1947, Blane wrote the music and lyrics for the musical Brigadoon, which was a huge success. He also wrote the music and lyrics for the musical High Button Shoes, which opened on Broadway in 1947. Blane wrote the music and lyrics for the musicals Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Hazel Flagg, and The Girl in Pink Tights. He also wrote the music for the film version of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Blane was nominated for two Academy Awards for his work on the films Meet Me in St. Louis and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Ralph Blane died on November 11, 1995 in Los Angeles, California. He was 81 years old.
