Peter McNamara is a former professional tennis player and coach from Australia. He was born on 5 July 1955 in Melbourne, Australia. He is best known for his doubles success, having won three Grand Slam doubles titles and reaching the world No. 1 doubles ranking in 1985. McNamara turned professional in 1977 and won his first doubles title in 1978. He won his first Grand Slam doubles title at the 1979 French Open, partnering compatriot Paul McNamee. He went on to win two more Grand Slam doubles titles, the 1982 US Open and the 1983 Australian Open. He also reached the finals of the 1983 Wimbledon Championships and the 1984 French Open. McNamara reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 19 in the world in 1984. He retired from professional tennis in 1989. McNamara has since become a successful coach, having coached players such as Lleyton Hewitt, Mark Philippoussis, and Jelena Dokic. He is currently the head coach of the Australian Fed Cup team. McNamara is married to former professional tennis player and coach, Jenny Byrne. They have two children together.
