Ossie Davis was an American actor, director, poet, playwright, and social activist. He was best known for his roles in films such as Do the Right Thing, The Client, and Grumpy Old Men. He was also a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1995. Davis was born on December 18, 1917, in Cogdell, Georgia. He attended Howard University, where he studied drama and was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. After graduating in 1938, he moved to New York City, where he began his career as an actor. Davis appeared in numerous films and television shows throughout his career, including The Client, Grumpy Old Men, and Do the Right Thing. He also wrote and directed several films, including Cotton Comes to Harlem and Gordon's War. In addition to his acting career, Davis was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement. He was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr., and was a speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. He was also a founding member of the Negro Ensemble Company, a theater group dedicated to producing plays by African-American writers. Davis was married to actress Ruby Dee from 1948 until his death in 2005. Together, they had three children. At the time of his death, Davis had an estimated net worth of $5 million.
