Nicholas Thorburn is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the frontman of the indie rock band Islands. He is also a member of the Canadian indie rock supergroup The Unicorns. Thorburn was born in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada. He began playing music at a young age, learning to play the guitar and drums. He attended high school in Victoria, British Columbia, and then moved to Montreal, Quebec, to attend McGill University. Thorburn formed the band Islands in 2005, and the band released their debut album Return to the Sea in 2006. The album was well-received, and the band went on to release four more albums, including Vapours (2009), A Sleep & a Forgetting (2012), Ski Mask (2016), and Should I Remain Here at Sea? (2016). Thorburn has also released two solo albums, Nicholas (2009) and Beat Happening (2011). He has collaborated with a number of other artists, including The Unicorns, The Hidden Cameras, and The Dears. He released the solo album, I Am an Attic, on his Bandcamp page in 2011. Thorburn was featured on the 2012 El-P album Cancer 4 Cure, singing the chorus of the track "Stay Down". In 2014, Thorburn composed the theme music and score for the critically acclaimed podcast Serial. In 2015, he released a second solo album titled City of Quartz.
