Moses Hogan was an American composer, arranger, and conductor of spirituals, anthems, and other choral works. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up in a musical family. He began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon playing in church. He attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, where he studied classical music and jazz. He went on to study at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. Hogan's arrangements of spirituals and other choral works have been performed by choirs around the world. He was the founder and director of the Moses Hogan Chorale, which performed his arrangements of spirituals and other choral works. He was also the artistic director of the New Orleans Children's Chorus. Hogan's compositions and arrangements have been recorded by many artists, including the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the King's Singers. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the ASCAP Choral Music Award, the ASCAP Concert Music Award, and the ASCAP/CMA Award for Choral Music. Hogan died on February 11, 2003, at the age of 46. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

Hogan was awarded a full scholarship to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano and graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Music degree. Immediately after graduation, he began graduate studies at the Juilliard School of Music, and later went to study classical music in Vienna. During his piano performance years, Hogan won several competitions including first place at the 28th Annual Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition in New York. He returned to Louisiana State University where he was offered the opportunity to work for his doctorate, but decided not to pursue it.

Hogan was musically educated from a young age, first enrolling in Xavier University Junior School of Music. In his sophomore year of high school, he was accepted to New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School and was in its first graduating class of 1975.
