Mindy Jostyn was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. She was best known for her work with John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and her own solo albums. She released her first solo album, "The Mindy Jostyn Project," in 1995. Jostyn was born in Long Island City, New York, and grew up in a musical family. She began playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the guitar, mandolin, and banjo. She attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated in 1979. Jostyn's career began in the early 1980s when she joined the band of John Prine. She toured with Prine for several years and appeared on his albums "Storm Windows" and "The Missing Years." She also wrote and performed on Emmylou Harris' album "Wrecking Ball." In 1995, Jostyn released her first solo album, "The Mindy Jostyn Project." The album featured her original songs and was critically acclaimed. She released two more solo albums, "The Other Side of Town" in 1998 and "The Best of Mindy Jostyn" in 2000. Jostyn also wrote and produced music for television and film. She wrote the theme song for the television show "The West Wing" and composed music for the films "The Horse Whisperer" and "The Rookie." Jostyn died of cancer on December 28, 2005, at the age of 49. She is survived by her husband, two sons, and a daughter.

Jostyn grew up in San Jose, California and Wellesley, Massachusetts. When she was eleven years old she founded her first band, "The Tigers". Her musical focal points were folk rock and pop. She played violin, guitar and harp, among other instruments. Before embarking on her solo career she was much sought-after by international artists like Joe Jackson, Billy Joel, The Hooters, Cyndi Lauper, Jon Bon Jovi and Shania Twain. She was married to Jacob Brackman, an American journalist, author and lyricist. She died of cancer in March 2005.
