Miles Davis was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz. Miles Davis was born on May 25, 1926, in Alton, Illinois. He began playing the trumpet at age 13, and within a few years was performing professionally. In 1944, he moved to New York City, where he studied at the Juilliard School of Music and began playing with some of the leading jazz musicians of the day. In the 1950s, Davis formed his own group, the Miles Davis Quintet, and began to explore the possibilities of modal jazz. He also experimented with electric instruments and funk rhythms, and in the 1960s he formed a new group, the Miles Davis Electric Band, which featured a more rock-influenced sound. In the 1970s, Davis returned to acoustic jazz, and in the 1980s he began to explore the possibilities of jazz-fusion. He continued to perform and record until his death in 1991. Miles Davis was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary jazz musicians. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

On 12 June 2012, Davis and French singer Édith Piaf were pictured on separate commemorative postage stamps in a joint issue by the USA and France. The nondenominated 'forever' USA stamps had an initial issue price of 45¢ each; the French stamps had denominations of 0,60 EUR (Davis) and 0,89 EUR (Piaf).
