Mercedes Pomares is a Cuban volleyball player who was born on April 9, 1954 in Cuba. She is one of the most successful volleyball players in the history of the sport, having won multiple Olympic medals and world championships. She was a member of the Cuban national team from 1975 to 1988, and was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Pomares was a powerful hitter and an excellent blocker, and was known for her aggressive style of play. She was also a great leader, and was the captain of the Cuban team for many years. In addition to her Olympic success, Pomares also won multiple world championships and Pan American Games medals. She was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2002. Pomares is currently retired from professional volleyball, but still works as a coach and mentor for young players. She is married and has two children.
