Mel Allen was an American sportscaster, best known for his long tenure as the primary play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees. He was also the host of the television game show "This Week in Baseball" from 1977 to 1989. Allen was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and attended the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After graduating in 1934, he began his broadcasting career at a local radio station in Birmingham. He then moved to New York City in 1939, where he worked for the Mutual Broadcasting System. In 1939, Allen began his long association with the Yankees, calling their games on the radio. He was the team's primary announcer until 1964, when he was replaced by Phil Rizzuto. Allen returned to the Yankees in 1966, and remained with the team until his retirement in 1984. In addition to his work with the Yankees, Allen also called the World Series for CBS Radio from 1958 to 1964, and the All-Star Game for NBC Radio from 1959 to 1964. He also hosted the television game show "This Week in Baseball" from 1977 to 1989. Allen was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978, and was awarded the Ford C. Frick Award in 1983. He died in 1996 at the age of 83.
